Jamaica introduces new taxes to tourists from next August 1

Tourists visiting Jamaica will have to pay a new tax of $ 20.00 to give birth on August 1, joining thus the $ 20.00 paid as an entrance fee and $ 20.00 out which is which tourists who arrive by plane to Jamaica will have to pay taxes totaling $ 60.00

This new tax will apply in the ticket price, as the two existing air taxes.

The move follows negotiations between the Association of Hotels and Tourism of Jamaica (JHTA) and representatives of both Ministries of Finance and Planning and tourism and entertainment.

In addition to this new tax, as of September 1 will be implemented another tax shelter. This new tax is set at $ 4.00 per room, per night for hotels with 100 rooms.

The tax is $ 2.00 per room, per night for hotel rooms from 51 to 100, and $ 1.00 for up to 50 hotel rooms.

Tourism Minister of Jamaica and entertainment, Wykeham McNeill, praised JHTA and other stakeholders for the finalization of a workable compromise to models previously proposed tax.

McNeill believes that these measures provide a win-win situation and ensure that the country meet its revenue targets, and the protection of the tourism industry, especially small properties.

«The measures taken for the purpose of an outcome that is beneficial to all parties involved,» said Evelyn Smith, president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism of Jamaica (JHTA).
